Butterflies and Damselflies workshop.

Its hard to believe it has been a month since my last post, where has the time gone!

Family life, work and the recent wet weather have sadley resulted in my camera staying in its bag :(

Enough waffle what about the Butterflies and Damselflies workshop I attended back in June. The workshop was run by Mark Sisson on the 24/06/10 in Shropshire. The day started very early with a 4am alarm call and two cups of very strong coffee and then a 90 minute drive.

After meeting up with the group Mark took us to Prees Heath  to photograph Sliver Studded Blue Butterflies. They are one of the rarest butterfly species on the uk and are no bigger than your thumbnail!!

This year there were thousands and thousands of them and we were spoilt for choice however I aimed to capture only a few quality images rather than filling lots of memory cards and then having to spend hours sorting through them.

After the butterflies and a hearty cooked breakfast to took the opportunity to visit Newport and photography a family of Swans with six cygnets, this was a bit of a challenge as they didn’t want to cooperate and so my Swan image will be going in the recycled bin. Still that’s wildlife for you.

Early after saw the group head to a pricate locatation to photograph the Demoiselle Damselfly. By this time the weather had improved and the damselflies were very active making hard to get a good shot. I have a one or two ok shot but not worth posting.

The end of the day saw three grown men lying on the floor hidden under camouflage netting being bitten by every blood thirsty insect around just so we could photographt wild rabbits. We must be mad!!

Still the day was very enjoyable. I photographed a wide range of subject, met some great people and have a few shots I can add to my stock library account. RESULT!

Here are few of the images taken on the day.

Early Bird Catches the Damselfly

Over the past two years I have been lucky enough to have access to private farmland on which there are a real mixture of habitats: Meadows, Woodland, Wetland and Arable Farmland. Wildlife species range from Fallow deer to butterflies and Damselflies.

Over the past two weekends I have tried to capture salable shots of DemselFlies, however the 3:00am starts have been a bit of a killer!

Strike while the iron is hot!

Where wildlife photography is concerned I always try and follow the old saying “strike while the iron is hot”. So here is my next post already!

On Wednesday of last week (14/04/2010) I had a one to one day session with professional wildlife photographer and good friend Mark Sisson. The first part of the morning  was spent trying to iron out a few technique and technical issues that I had been experiencing . After that it was a real photo-fest! I had a great day, took a fast number of shot I really happy with (even now) and learnt a lot.

If anyone reading this post is looking to go on a one day photography workshop or extended photography holiday I can recommend Natures Images I have been on three workshops with Mark to date with a fourth in the pipeline for June.

Thanks Mark for a great day!

A New Start

Hello,

I have finally got around to starting my first wildlife photography related blog! I have been interested in the natural world for over 30 years ago. I started to take photographs to record what I saw about 15 years ago (with mixed results). Then one day I came across an article featuring Heather Angel, well that was it I was hooked on wildlife photography as an art form!!

I have been taking wildlife photographs seriously (although on an amateur bases) for 13 years within the county of Worcestershire. Visit my new website www.wildaboutwildlife.co.uk to view my work. Its a work in progress and will populated with lots of images over the next few months.

The purpose of this blog is let you know what I have been up to i.e. my success stories and my failures and any interesting events/workshops I have been to. I am sure I will add posts when ever I find a useful website, article, workshop or book etc.

Please feel free to comment on any posts you come across.
